DITCH YOUR NON-STICK FOR A BETTER HEALTH!

Non-stick, given its advantage of easy cleaning and almost zero oil cooking has gained popularity amongst most of the women and weight watchers around the globe. I was no exception.

I would make omelets, pan cakes and all those things which otherwise required good amount of oil, in my Non-Stick pan and be happy about my almost zero oil cooking.

However, when I read a book on healthy living, I came across the topic which mentioned Non-Stick cookware being Toxic and Hazardous..

It was something that alerted me and I immediately started looking for more information about it. Ever since then I haven’t used a Non-Stick in my kitchen.

The Ugly Truth about Non-Stick:

Non-stick surfaces are metal pans coated with Teflon. The chemical name for Teflon is Polytetrafluoroetheylene (PTFE). This chemical is what keeps food from sticking to Non-Stick Cookware. .

However, the problem with Non-Stick cookware comes from another chemical used in making Teflon. This chemical Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) has been linked to:

  • Cancer in laboratory animals.
  • Possibly linked to elevated Cholesterol and Thyroid diseases.
  • Reduced Fertility in people.

Due to excess use of Non-Stick, PFOA is widespread in the blood of the general population (though in low concentrations), where it remains for up to 10 years before being eliminated.

An advisory board of 17 scientists from Environment Protection Agency of USA (EPA) unanimously recommended PFOA be labelled a likely Carcinogen (a Carcinogen is a Cancer-Causing substance) in humans.

At high temperature Teflon coated cookware release 15 types of Toxic Particles and Gases, including Trifluoroacetic Acid (TFA) and Phosgene, which may cause Cancer in humans along with Headaches, chills, Backache and Fever – a condition known as ‘Teflon Flu’.

A recent study has shown a link between Thyroid Disease, Cancer and Teflon.

The study reported that people with high levels of PFOA, were more likely to develop Thyroid problems, as well as various Types of Cancers.

Most of the people tend to use Battered and Scratched Teflon Cookware as they get scratched easily. Teflon is usually used to cover Aluminum Cookware which in itself is a Dangerous Metal – implicated in Alzheimer and Dementia.

After gathering the Information that I have shared with you above, I started looking out for Safer Alternatives to Teflon.

1.) Ceramic Cookware and Bakeware: Ceramic or Porcelain coated cookware are easy to clean and allow no oil cooking just like Teflon.

However they are Safe and Non Reactive, as it does not release any toxins into food unlike Teflon. I use it for my everyday cooking without any hassle. They are also great for Baking.

2.) Cast Iron Cookware: Initially I was a little unsure about using cast iron cookware as they are not that easy to clean and maintain. Since it had added benefit of the extra Iron in our Diet by cooking in it. So I started using it and I am glad that I did.

However, you can’t cook Tomato products in it as the Acid interacts with the pH of the pan and gets an Odd-Flavor.

Cast iron cookware can be used in the oven or on the stovetop.

3.) Glass Cookware: They are great as they are completely chemical free.I use Glass for Storing Food and also in Microwave. They also add beauty to your kitchen.

There are a lot of options available in the market for Glass Cookware. Tempered Glass Cookware are used for Baking and Stovetop Cooking.

4.) Clay Cookware: Unglazed Clay Cookware holds special place in Kitchens since Ages and serves as a more Natural Cooking Alternative. Clay holds Heat and Moisture. It helps retain Nutrient Content and also enhances Flavor .

I make Curd in Clay Utensils as it adds a Distinctive flavor to the Curd. My Aunt makes few of her special Dishes in typical Clay Cookware which adds Amazing flavor to her dishes.

However, Clay Cookware are less durable and needs extra care to protect the life span of the product. But don’t let that stop you from using them

5.) Steel Cookware: They are a must have in almost all of Indian Kitchens and I am no exception. I use Steel Cookware and Utensils on daily basis as they are Safe and Toxin free. Also they are easy to use and handle.
